How to use Omnikonto
Omnikonto brings together the statements of all your accounts — at different banks and in different countries — and shows the big picture: how much money you have, where it goes, which subscriptions you pay for, and whether you are staying within budget. There is no need to connect to your banks: you upload the statements you download from online banking yourself.
1. Getting started
- Sign up. Your email, your name in Latin letters — as banks write it on statements — and a password of at least 12 characters. Confirm your address using the link in the email.
- Sign-in protection. Install an authenticator app on your phone (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Aegis, 1Password) and scan the QR code. Each time you sign in, the program will ask for the 6-digit code from the app. Save the backup codes, which are shown only once: without them you cannot sign in if you lose your phone.
- Getting started page. Enter how banks write your name (several variants are fine: "Anna Martin", "MARTIN ANNA"), your country of tax residence and, if you wish, consent to statement recognition with AI.
- First statement. "Import" → choose the files → "Upload". The account is created automatically from the number in the statement.
2. Statements
Where to get them. In your bank's online banking or app: the "Statements" section (Relevés, Kontoauszüge). You need a PDF or CSV file downloaded from the bank — not a scan or a photo.
Which banks. Wise, Revolut, N26, Société Générale, Signet Bank, Interactive Brokers and the MT940 format have built-in formats: they are read instantly and free of charge. Statements from other banks are recognised with AI — if you have given consent (see AI).
Which period. To start with, the last 6–12 months for each account: you will then immediately see average spending, subscriptions and budgets. After that, once a month, after the month has closed.
Checks. On upload, the program checks the balances: opening balance + transactions = closing balance. If anything does not match, nothing is imported — so errors do not get into your records. Uploading the same file again or an overlapping period does not create duplicates. A wrong upload can be undone: "Import" → the upload → "Undo import".
3. To review
The program sorts transactions into categories automatically using rules ("Carrefour" → "Groceries"). Anything it did not recognise goes to "To review". Choose a category and tick the "rule" box — all future transactions from this merchant will then be categorised automatically. Usually there is almost nothing left to review after the first two or three months.
You can change the category of any transaction by opening it. Your rules are under "Rules". Mark a large unusual expense (renovation, holiday, appliances) as a "One-off expense": it stays in the month's spending but does not distort averages and suggested limits.
4. Transfers between your accounts
A transfer from one of your accounts to another is neither income nor spending. The program finds such pairs itself (an amount leaves one account and the same amount arrives on another of yours). Confident pairs are confirmed automatically; the rest are under "Transfers": confirm or reject them. For this to work, enter how banks write your name in your profile and upload statements for all your accounts.
5. Overview, spending, recurring payments, budgets
- Overview — money in all accounts, income and spending by month, spending by category against the average, savings and investments.
- Spending — for any period: by category, by day, where you spent the most. Export to Excel.
- Recurring — subscriptions, bills, insurance and monthly transfers. The program finds them itself and shows the amount per month, upcoming payments and subscriptions that have stopped. If something ended up here by mistake — "not recurring".
- Budgets — a monthly limit per category or for all spending. You can see how much you have already spent, whether you are on track and how previous months went. The "Fill empty limits from the six-month average" button sets limits from your actual spending — then lower them where you want to spend less.
6. Cash
If you use cash, create a wallet under "Cash": enter how much cash you have on hand and the date from which to track it (today is best).
- An ATM withdrawal becomes a "bank → wallet" transfer, not an expense.
- Add noticeable cash expenses and cash received with the "Add transaction" button.
- Small items need not be entered: once a week or a month, count your money and enter the amount under "Recount the wallet" — the difference is recorded as a single line "Cash spending (not itemised)".
7. Accounts and savings
"Accounts" lists all your accounts. For brokerage and savings accounts without statements (PEL, Livret A, custody accounts), enter the value at a date — it is included in "Everything together" on the Overview. The program reads Interactive Brokers reports by itself.
8. Taxes
This section works for French tax residents: a list of foreign accounts for form 3916 (and 3916-bis for crypto) and a draft return for foreign income — dividends, interest, sales of securities, tax withheld abroad. It is a draft for you or your accountant, not a ready-to-file return: check the figures before filing. Other countries will follow.
9. Artificial intelligence
AI (Claude by Anthropic) is used only with your consent — given on the Getting started page or in "Settings":
- Statement recognition for banks without a built-in format: the file is sent to Anthropic, the transactions come back and are always checked against the balances.
- Sorting "Other expenses" ("Rules" → "Sort with AI"): only merchant names and a short description are sent — no amounts, dates or account numbers.
During the beta there is a monthly AI spending limit per person — enough for roughly 15–100 statements. Without consent, no data is sent to AI.
10. Security and your data
- Sign-in requires both your password and a code from the app on your phone.
- Statement files and account numbers are stored encrypted with a key specific to each user. Only you can see your data.
- "Settings" → "Download my data" — an archive with all your data in Excel and the original statements.
- "Settings" → "Delete account" — deletes everything permanently.
- Details are in the privacy policy.
11. Frequently asked questions
"File format not recognised". Check that it is a PDF or CSV from online banking, not a scan. For a bank without a built-in format, choose "Recognise with AI" in the "Format" field.
"No account found with number…". The number in the statement did not match any account and the bank could not be identified. Add the account under "Accounts" or choose it manually when uploading.
"Balances do not match". The file is incomplete (for example, not all pages were saved) or the bank has changed its format. Download the statement again; if that does not help, write to us.
A transfer to myself was counted as spending. Open the transaction and link it to the matching transaction on another account, or click "Transfer to myself, but the other side will not be imported".
